See yourself in unity with all

Thank you for visiting our website!

We are the Maratika Foundation, a committed group of volunteers dedicated to serve the monks of Maratika, a revered Buddhist Monastery in Eastern Nepal. Maratika Monastery is a major pilgrims site due to the sacred caves that it is connected to and committed to preserve. Our mission, in turn, is to support the Maratika monks community and uplift it through diverse programs - from teaching English to introducing a healthy diet - while at the same time provide a tranquil environment for spiritual development for our volunteers.

We welcome you to be part of this heartfelt effort to create a positive impact in this extraordinary community.

About Us

Maratika Foundation was founded in 2015 by Satya Katiza Ivulic and Sahaj Kevin Wood after they visited the Maratika Monastery and caves and met with the community. The Foundation was then born with the original idea to preserve and promote the teachings of the Buddha, and to create a space for all to explore and deepen their spiritual practice through volunteer work.

Our work was initially focused on the renovation of the Maratika Monastery. After that goal was reached, we turned exclusively towards the well-being of the Maratika monks. The first related project was the English language program, launched in 2018. Since then, we have expanded the scope of our work through a variety of other much needed initiates.

English Teaching

Building Bridges

Our leading program presents a remarkable opportunity for volunteers to engage directly with the Maratika monks. In this life-changing experience, we focus on imparting essential English language skills that are becoming increasingly important for the monks when navigating in a world that values global communication. Our volunteers are fully submerged in an unspoiled Tibetan Buddhist environment and learn just as much (if not more) from the monks and their teachers.

Improving Health

Providing nutritional, healthy and tasty meals in remote areas is not an easy task. Finding a skillful permanent cook, who is acquainted with the Buddhist vegetarian diet, can be even harder. We provide the Maratika cook's monthly allowance, while our teachers put emphasis in class on how maintaining a spotless hygiene in the kitchen contributes to strong health.

Making a Difference

There are over 50 monks currently living and studying at Maratika. The Monastery needs all the financial support possible in covering the monks yearly expenses. Whenever possible, the Maratika Foundation contributes towards that as it is essential for ensuring that the monks continue to receive excellent care.
